Many people end up using alcohol and drugs to ‘self-medicate’ the symptoms of depression. But substance abuse seriously impacts your ability to deal with depression, and can make it worse. Reducing the use of drugs and alcohol is a positive first step in any treatment programme – either on your own, or with help from others.

what you can do

quit smoking

Cigarette smoking is undeniably bad for your health, so getting help to quit is a good idea.

avoid recreational drugs

Cannabis or marijuana and other illegal drugs can have a negative impact on your mental health. They can cause you to develop depression or anxiety in the first place, or they can make it worse. Many people who use amphetamines will develop depression and anxiety, and have panic attacks and paranoia. Ecstasy can cause severe mental and emotional disturbances. Withdrawing from addictive drugs can also cause depression, anxiety, and irritability. Most illegal drugs and alcohol interfere with the effects of antidepressant drugs, which can be dangerous.

ask for help

It can be very hard to make changes when you are depressed. So ask your friends, family and/or doctor to help you plan how to cut down or give up. Your doctor can recommend an alcohol and drug counselling service to help you.

what others can do

Friends and family can be really helpful in supporting people to quit, control or reduce their drug and alcohol intake. Remember they might need to spend less time in places where they are likely to drink or do recreational drugs.

Many people with depression or anxiety start smoking cigarettes, without realising how addictive nicotine is. They quickly become addicted and like everyone who smokes for any length of time, find it incredibly hard to quit. You can play a part by helping them not to start smoking in the first place.
