There are several types of therapy available, and each takes a slightly different approach to the underlying causes of depression. To be effective, psychological therapy must be carried out by a trained doctor, nurse, counsellor, social worker, psychiatrist or psychologist.

therapy

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

CBT helps to change your negative thought patterns, based on the principle that how you think affects how you feel and act. CBT provides a structured way of thinking rationally about situations that have become difficult or overwhelming.

Structured Problem Solving (SPS)

SPS is a brief talking therapy that aims to teach a “thinking skill” - that is an approach to solving problems. Most people solve problems using trial and error but this therapy takes a “whole of brain approach” and teaches you to step back and evaluate problems in a structured way. It is very similar to personal coaching and has been found to be effective in treating mild to moderate depression.

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)

When you experience depression it’s easy to get upset by other people’s comments. Communication can become difficult, and you may feel as though you’ve been criticised when this was not intended. IPT is a structured programme that focusses on helping you find ways to get along better with others.

Psychotherapy

There are different types of psychotherapy. In New Zealand “psychotherapy” usually means a talking treatment which links what has happened in the past, with what is happening in your life currently. It also explores what is happening between you and your therapist. This treatment usually takes longer than other talking therapies.

counselling

There are also different kinds of counselling available in NZ, and some counsellors have been trained in one or more of the therapies above. Most counselling concentrates on current problems and offers supportive advice which tries to encourage people to solve their own problems. Counsellors help people to express feelings and clarify thoughts and difficulties.

It’s important to select the best therapy option for you. Your doctor or the Depression Helpline can help you decide which would be most effective for your situation.
